ATLANTA, GA - (November 14, 2003) - Surveying is underway on 60 miles of Atlanta Gas Light Company's pipeline running from Clayton County to Monroe County in preparation for replacing that pipeline next year.

As part of a 10-year agreement with the Georgia Public Service Commission (GPSC), AGLC is replacing more than 2,300 miles of bare steel and cast iron pipeline in its 55,300-mile natural gas system. In the first five years of the program, the company replaced more than 1,280 miles of main pipe and 22,000 service lines (smaller pipe that goes to businesses and residences).

"The replacement program is integral to our commitment to maintain a safe and reliable natural gas delivery system in Georgia," said Isaac Blythers, president of AGLC. "We regularly inspect our pipelines and replace them when necessary."

Construction on the project is expected to begin in early 2004 and will be completed before the end of the year.

The pipeline was installed originally as a bare steel petroleum line in the 1940s. It was then acquired by AGLC and put into natural gas service in the mid 1980s.

This pipeline project, which is being monitored by the GPSC, is intended to modernize facilities that are part of the backbone of the AGLC system. New, high-quality coated steel pipe will be installed in place of the old bare-steel line. This improvement will help ensure the safety and security of Georgia's natural gas supply.

AGLC representatives have been working with property owners along the pipeline route to obtain their permission to survey, and to inform them of next year's construction schedule. Construction will be done as quickly as possible in order to minimize any impact on property owners and neighborhoods along the route.
