Atlanta Gas Light STRIDE Program Helps Land Manufacturing Plant in Savannah

Atlanta Gas Light offers tips to help customers prepare for the upcoming heating season.

ATLANTA, Nov. 1, 2013 – As Atlanta Gas Light, a subsidiary of AGL Resources (NYSE:GAS), prepares for the coldest days of the winter heating season, the following resources are offered as tips for assistance on energy bills:

  • Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) helps eligible customers pay for their winter heating service and also may cover certain cooling expenses for customers with specific medical conditions. Eligibility is based on household size and income.
    • Early enrollment for seniors and people with disabilities will begin on Nov. 1, 2013, and general enrollment begins Dec. 1, 2013.
    • If a participant qualified for LIHEAP last year, they must reapply by submitting the state recertification form they have or will receive in the mail, along with all required documents, to their local agency.
    • For more information about Georgia LIHEAP, call 1-800-869-1150 or visit http://www.heatga.org/get-assistance/other-resources for a list of other resources.
  • H.E.A.T – The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) distributes H.E.A.T. funds statewide through local community action agencies. H.E.A.T. funds assist households experiencing a potential loss of energy service or households that are in need of getting service restored. Customers can visit www.heatga.org or call 678-406-0212 to discuss eligibility.
  • Senior Discount Program - AGLC will provide eligible senior citizens with a discount of $14.00 a month on their natural gas bills. The monthly discount is reflected on the bill they receive from their natural gas provider. For more information on eligibility, please contact your provider.
  • Resource Service Ministries – The Georgia Public Service Commission provides funding for emergency repairs of gas furnaces and water heaters to eligible senior citizens over 65 years of age. The program ends this year and funding may be available only on a first come, first served basis. Seniors can apply by calling (404) 352-5440 or sending an email to mkimsey@rsmin.org.
  • United Way – Customers can call United Way’s 2-1-1 number for a listing of other agencies that can assist with available funding.
Natural gas customers also can take additional action on preparing for the winter heating season by doing the following:
  • Installing a programmable thermostat, this allows customers to set the temperature in their home while they are away. For example, the temperature can be cooler while they are away from their home, and then it can be programmed to increase the temperature automatically when they are about to return home.
  • Inspecting windows and doors for drafts. Use caulk or sealant to insulate areas.
  • Opening drapes and shades during the day to allow sunlight to come in.
  • If you have a fire place, remembering to close the flue when it is not in use, so that warm air does not have an escape route.
