Atlanta Gas Light Celebrates 160 years of Service to Georgia Communities
ATLANTA – Feb. 16, 2016 – Today Atlanta Gas Light marks 160 years of service to Georgia communities. Founded on February 16, 1856, to light the streets of Atlanta by using gas lamps, Atlanta Gas Light has grown with the state but always has remained deeply rooted in the communities it serves, providing energy for the homes and businesses of more than 1.5 million customers.
“Atlanta Gas Light is proud to celebrate 160 years of service,” said company President Bryan Batson. “We have grown from a small company that was very singularly focused on serving our first customer, the City of Atlanta, to a large company that delivers natural gas to residential, commercial and industrial consumers throughout the state. We certainly don’t take for granted the longevity that we have enjoyed in this business, which is demonstrated by our continued commitment to deliver natural gas safely and reliably, provide outstanding customer service and give back to the communities we serve.”
As one of the oldest companies in Georgia, Atlanta Gas Light is one of the state’s most distinguished corporate citizens. Consider just a few historic facts about the company:

- Cooking with natural gas was first introduced in 1881.
