Atlanta Gas Light and City of Atlanta partner to support White House Initiative
Atlanta continues commitment toward improving energy efficiency.ATLANTA – Dec. 26, 2013 – Atlanta Gas Light (AGL) and the City of Atlanta have signed on to support the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Better Buildings Initiative Energy Data Accelerator. In 2011 both Atlanta partners committed to the Better Buildings Challenge as a part of President Obama’s Climate Change Action Plan, which looks to make commercial buildings 20 percent more energy efficient by 2020 and accelerate private sector investment in energy efficiency. The Energy Data Accelerator is an extension of the Better Buildings Challenge, one of three new initiatives under the Better Business Accelerators designed to bring utilities and government officials together to cut building energy waste.
“Atlanta Gas Light is proud to continue its partnership with the City of Atlanta to support energy efficiency efforts,” said Bryan Batson, president of Atlanta Gas Light. As a provider of America’s abundant supply of clean, reliable and energy-efficient natural gas we value the Better Building Challenge as it will bring about positive energy changes that will directly benefit our business communities and our nation.”
Atlanta joins more than 30 cities and utilities across the country that have committed to demonstrate streamlined, best-practice approaches for building owners to access whole-building energy usage data for the purposes of benchmarking and achieving greater energy and cost savings.
“Atlanta Gas Light has been a strong partner to the City of Atlanta and the Atlanta Better Buildings Challenge,” said Denise Quarles, director of sustainability – City of Atlanta. “AGL has a consistent track record of delivering results through innovative projects like the retrofit work done to the Atlanta Civic Center through its SEED program. The Energy Data Accelerator will help us to make better informed decisions and see greater returns on investments made in City facilities as we continue to make strides toward making Atlanta a top-tier city for sustainability.”
The Department of Energy will support Better Buildings Accelerator partners with training, technical assistance, tools and resources.
“Through President Obama’s Better Buildings Initiative, our partners are committing to real change – breaking through barriers and solving common challenges across the U.S. building energy industry,” said Deputy Secretary of Energy Daniel Poneman. “We applaud these partners for joining in this leadership initiative, and we look forward to working with them as they help drive greater energy efficiency for industrial, commercial and public buildings – cutting harmful pollution and saving on energy bills.”
