Southern Company Gas Investment Brings Marcellus Shale Gas to North Georgia

Interstate Natural Gas Line Expansion in service

ATLANTA – August 1, 2017 – Customers of Atlanta Gas Light and other utilities in northwest Georgia will benefit from new shale natural gas supplies being brought on-line August 1 by Williams Partners L.P, parent company of Transco, the nation’s largest-volume and fastest-growing interstate natural gas pipeline system.

“With so few interstate pipelines being built today and growing demand for natural gas in the north Georgia area, this project is already proving to be a wise investment for our company and our customers,” said Hank Linginfelter, Executive Vice President of Southern Company Gas.

The 115-mile Dalton Expansion Project connects the existing Transco pipeline system in Coweta County with two new delivery points in Paulding and Murray Counties in north Georgia. Southern Company Gas announced its 50% investment (approximately $210 million) in the Dalton Expansion Project in April of 2014 and its intention to lease its capacity on the line to its subsidiary, Atlanta Gas Light, and other utility interests. Construction began in August of 2016 when it was approved by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission.

The pipeline was designed to transport approximately 448,000 dekatherms of natural gas per day, enough natural gas to meet the daily needs of about 2 million homes.  The line will serve an Oglethorpe Power Corporation’s electric generating facility, the City of Cartersville, and Atlanta Gas Light.

“These new delivery points in northwest Georgia will allow us to move gas into communities, such as Rome and Calhoun where supplies and future growth opportunities have been constrained due to limited pipeline capacity,” said Bryan Batson, President of Atlanta Gas Light.  “We appreciate the foresight of the Georgia Public Service Commission in recognizing the value of this asset in our capacity supply plan.  The Dalton Expansion Project boosted capacity throughout north Georgia and avoided the need for us to construct more than $280 million in additional transmission lines and other facilities in the metro Atlanta and northwest Georgia areas,” added Batson.
