Atlanta Gas Light volunteers recently came together to clean up and restore the outdoor spaces at Hope Haven of Northeast Georgia Inc.’s campus in Athens. Hope Haven’s clients, employees and guests can now enjoy a new walking trail, and revitalized gardens and landscaping. This marks the first time Atlanta Gas Light team members have built a walking trail at Hope Haven since their community partnership began in 2013.
As the second oldest community program for individuals with developmental disabilities in Georgia, Hope Haven has empowered clients and their families, fostering positive life experiences that encourage confidence and independence.
In the U.S., one in four adults lives with a disability, yet many still face societal barriers. Research indicates that physical activity plays an important role in maintaining health, well-being and quality of life. For individuals with disabilities, physical exercise is essential in supporting daily living activities and promoting independence.
The CDC highlights that adults with disabilities often face fewer neighborhood environmental support structures, such as sidewalks and walkable businesses, and more barriers like traffic, which hinder walking. To encourage mobility, Atlanta Gas Light employees collaborated with Hope Haven to build a walking trail that offers a safe, accessible space for visitors to engage in regular physical activity and enjoy a peaceful environment that enhances overall mental health.
“Hope Haven is dedicated to helping individuals live independently within our community. We assist individuals in obtaining and retaining competitive employment, living independently in their homes, and being actively involved in their community,” said Amy Moore, executive director, Hope Haven of Northeast Georgia, Inc. “Support from corporate partners like Atlanta Gas Light has improved our property and facilities, increased access to resources, and positively impacted the lives of the adults we serve.”
During the volunteer event, Atlanta Gas Light employees collectively donated 50 hours of service, rolling up their sleeves to build the walking trail, pressure wash sidewalks, and clean and beautify the environment.
Atlanta Gas Light is committed to delivering outstanding operational efficiency and fostering community growth. Our dedicated employees continuously seek opportunities to give back and partner with organizations to make a positive impact across our hometown communities year-round.
“We are proud to support Hope Haven in its mission to prepare, empower, and connect adults with developmental disabilities, thereby strengthening our community,” said Roy Chapman, director of regional operations at Atlanta Gas Light. “Our commitment to being ‘a citizen wherever we serve’ includes championing nonprofit organizations that connect our neighbors with the skills and long-term resources they need to thrive.”
