Empowering Legacies: Atlanta Gas Light joins the Thank Me Later Foundation to support legacy planning

Black Women Will Homecoming Event

Over the next 25 years, an estimated $84 trillion will be transferred from U.S. households to heirs and charities. More than 70% of Black Americans, however, don’t have a will – regardless of income or assets – potentially leaving their families out of the largest wealth transfer in history.

In a heartwarming display of community and empowerment, the Thank Me Later Foundation, with the support of Atlanta Gas Light, hosted its 4th annual Black Women Will Homecoming event on November 16. The program welcomed 190 Black female homeowners who came together with a shared purpose: to secure their financial futures and create lasting legacies.

The atmosphere was fueled with a sense of unity as the attendees prepared to transfer $80 million worth of assets through their estate. From real estate to bank accounts and investment portfolios, the event provided a comprehensive platform for attendees to complete their wills, power of attorney documents and healthcare directives—all at no cost.

As part of its focus on economic mobility, Atlanta Gas Light, an event sponsor, provided a team of volunteers who joined more than 100 legal experts in assisting participants with completing their estate planning documents. The company also sponsored participants, making it possible for more people to benefit from the event. Additionally, they provided a comprehensive list of bill payment assistance programs and agencies to help those who are in need.

“We are so thankful that Atlanta Gas Light joined the Thank Me Later Foundation’s mission to empower Black families for generations,” said Jini Thornton, Founder and Executive Director of The Thank Me Later Foundation and Black Women Will. “One of the key reasons why Black Women Will is so unique is because we go beyond just giving information - we are committed to transformation.”

To date, the annual Black Women Will event has successfully completed more than 486 wills and healthcare directives, with plans to transfer over $188 million worth of assets. By providing the resources and support needed to understand and complete estate planning, the foundation is breaking down barriers and making financial mobility accessible to all.
