The Atlanta Gas Light Foundation, in partnership with Goodr, hosted a free Pop-Up Grocery Market at Shorty Howell Park in Duluth, Georgia, to support local families. In total, community volunteers distributed roughly 5,200 pounds of food to families in need. The event provided nearly 200 families with a week’s worth of groceries, including meat, fresh produce, dairy, bread, shelf-stable items, and snacks.
Food insecurity remains a top issue across Georgia, forcing many individuals and families to choose between purchasing groceries and covering other critical expenses like housing, education or health care. Food insecurity affects 12.2% of Gwinnett County residents and nearly 15% of Georgians, according to Feeding America.
Poverty rates in Duluth and surrounding areas further illustrate the economic challenges many communities face. In Duluth’s 30096 ZIP code, the poverty rate stands at 11.4%, while in the neighboring 30071 ZIP code, it rises to 20.0%, according to data from Live Healthy Gwinnett.
“Atlanta Gas Light is proud to partner with Goodr to address poverty, food waste, and hunger – offering families an opportunity to thrive,” said Walt Farrell, president and CEO of Atlanta Gas Light. “With food aid need in Gwinnett County more than doubling since 2019, the need for scalable, sustainable solutions is urgent. Goodr’s pop-up grocery model allows us to meet families where they are, delivering support with speed, efficiency, and respect.”
As one of Georgia’s oldest corporations, Atlanta Gas Light recognizes its unique responsibility to serve those most in need. “Food insecurity touches every community. With Atlanta Gas Light’s support, we can meet families in Gwinnett with support, solutions and dignity,” said Jasmine Crowe-Houston, founder and CEO of Goodr.
The Pop-Up Grocery Market was one of several events Atlanta Gas Light and its foundation have held across Georgia with Goodr since 2021. Over the last four years, Atlanta Gas Light and the Atlanta Gas Light Foundation have donated more than $400,000 to Goodr in support of its mission to end waste and fight hunger.
