Every dream is fueled by opportunity and support. For many individuals and families facing hardship, that opportunity begins with access to essentials such as food, clothing, medical care and education. Through its programs and services, the Augusta Dream Center, a local nonprofit, helps turn hope into action, creating pathways for neighbors across the community to thrive.
Recently, Atlanta Gas Light volunteers joined that effort by supporting the nonprofit's weekly Food Pantry and Clothes Closet distribution. Working alongside Augusta Dream Center staff, team members supported approximately 300 families throughout the Central Savannah River Area.
"Atlanta Gas Light is honored to collaborate with the Augusta Dream Center in its efforts to help ensure individuals and families have the resources they need to thrive," said Chris Smith, regional director of field operations for Atlanta Gas Light's East Region. "When we dedicate our time and talents alongside organizations that are fueling positive change, we can accomplish more together and strengthen the communities we serve."
Company volunteers distributed a week's worth of groceries, including fresh produce, meat, bread and desserts, while also providing new and gently used clothing for men, women and children.
The volunteer effort comes at a critical time for many Georgia households. Food insecurity continues to affect families across the state, forcing some to make difficult choices between purchasing groceries and covering other necessities such as housing, education and health care. According to Feeding America, 19% of Richmond County residents experience food insecurity, compared with 15.6% statewide.
According to the organization's Impact Report, more than 32,500 individuals have benefited from its feeding programs, while more than 500,000 pounds of food and 750,000 clothing items have been distributed to neighbors throughout the service area.
For 170 years, Atlanta Gas Light has been committed to serving communities across Georgia. By giving their time and talents, employees continue that legacy today, helping ensure local families have access to critical support while building a stronger, more hopeful tomorrow.
