Fueling communities: Atlanta Gas Light celebrates 170 years of service

Historic milestone highlights company’s enduring role in shaping communities, supporting economic development, and delivering energy solutions for the future

Atlanta – Feb. 16, 2026
– Atlanta Gas Light lit the first gas lamps in Atlanta on Dec. 25, 1855. Just weeks later, it was officially incorporated on February 16, 1856. The company is now celebrating its 170th anniversary – a rare achievement in business that underscores the company’s deep roots in Georgia and its ongoing leadership in meeting the state’s growing energy needs.

Today, Atlanta Gas Light stands as Atlanta’s oldest corporation and one of Georgia’s most enduring institutions: an essential part of the state’s infrastructure, economy, and community fabric.

Since its founding, it has remained committed to providing clean, safe, reliable and affordable natural gas to its customers. The company is more than an energy provider; it’s a trusted partner to the approximately 1.8 million customers who rely on it every day.

“As we celebrate 170 years of service, I’m inspired by the resilience and dedication of our team members who work around the clock to achieve operational excellence, deliver deep value for our customers, keep our operations running efficiently and uplift our neighborhoods through giving and volunteerism,” said Walt Farrell, president and CEO of Atlanta Gas Light. “Looking ahead, these qualities will guide how we serve the next generation of Georgians and strengthen the communities we proudly call home.”

The company plays a pivotal role supporting Georgia’s growing economy. It also invests as much as $50 million annually in its natural gas infrastructure that helps attract new businesses, create jobs, improve efficiency and strengthen local economies. This sustained investment has helped position Georgia among the nation’s top states for business and continues to enable growth in manufacturing, logistics, and other energy‑intensive industries.

Atlanta Gas Light’s innovation continues to deliver value for customers as well. Through new operational efficiencies, the company is enhancing customer value. Key initiatives include:

  • Advanced leak detection tools that improve system safety and reduce emissions.
  • A growing fleet fueled by compressed natural gas (CNG) and renewable natural gas (RNG) that contribute to vehicle emission reductions.
  • Operational efficiencies that help manage costs and support long-term stability.

Through in‑state customer service, rebate programs that expand access to energy‑efficient gas appliances, and educational resources that help households manage their bills, the company continually strives to exceed customer expectations.

For those experiencing hardship, Atlanta Gas Light provides critical funding for energy‑bill assistance and support of United Way’s 211 programs, while the Atlanta Gas Light Foundation supports local nonprofits advancing economic mobility, environmental stewardship, and community resilience. In 2025 alone, Atlanta Gas Light and its foundation invested more than $2.5 million in nonprofits and community organizations across Georgia.

Since their inception, the company and foundation together have contributed more than $150 million in community progress, supporting nonprofits and organizations that expand opportunity and improve quality of life for communities statewide.

Additionally, company employees contribute thousands of volunteer hours annually to the nonprofits serving the most locally relevant needs, strengthening neighborhoods and supporting people across Georgia.

From its inception bringing light to Atlanta’s dark streets to its modern role in heating and fueling Georgia homes, industries, and communities, Atlanta Gas Light’s 170‑year history is a story of innovation, resilience, and shared progress.

“We are proud of the role we have played in Georgia, and we believe our future is bright,” added Farrell. “Together, Atlanta Gas Light and its employees will continue to build on this legacy in order to strengthen the communities where we live, work and serve for generations to come.”
