Atlanta Gas Light recently reached a new height in safety by conducting its first emergency response drill at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.
Hosted in partnership with the City of Atlanta’s Department of Aviation and community organizations, the exercise simulated an emergency incident in the airport’s busy cargo area. Atlanta Gas Light crew members, outfitted in full safety gear, responded to the site in a coordinated effort to test the company’s emergency response plan and strengthen collaboration across multiple agencies.
“At Atlanta Gas Light, safety is our number one value,” said Misty Fernandez, vice president of operations at Atlanta Gas Light. “In a real emergency, every second counts. We’re incredibly proud of the support and collaboration from our aviation and emergency response partners – their dedication was essential to the success of this exercise.”
The company’s employees undergo rigorous, year-round training to stay prepared for real-world emergencies. On-site drills like this one allow crews to enhance their skills and apply innovative technology in a restricted environment – an essential part of maintaining effective response capabilities.
“Our team members are trained and equipped to respond promptly, communicate effectively, and serve our communities with confidence,” Fernandez added. “For nearly 170 years, Atlanta Gas Light has remained committed to delivering clean, safe, reliable, and affordable natural gas service. That commitment begins with our dedicated employees who maintain and support the infrastructure that fuels our communities.”
During the event, Atlanta Gas Light team members displayed vehicles and equipment, shared safety tips with attendees, and displayed damaged materials to highlight the importance of safety.
As the world’s busiest airport, Hartsfield-Jackson accommodated more than 790,000 takeoffs and landings last year alone. Fernandez shared that the company successfully carried out the large-scale drill – using current technology and personnel – without disrupting airport operations.
As Georgia prepares to welcome millions of visitors over the next year for both leisure and business – Atlanta Gas Light remains focused on safety. By working closely with public safety agencies such as the Atlanta Police Department and Atlanta Fire Rescue Department, as well as local communities, the company is helping protect its employees and the 1.8 million customers it serves across the state.
