Atlanta Gas Light is committed to reducing our emissions, protecting our natural environment and promoting social well-being and safety. We have a goal to achieve net-zero operational GHG emissions by 2050. To work toward this goal, we’re deploying tools and infrastructure modernization and engaging with like-minded organizations and partners to advance clean energy initiatives.
We support emissions reductions and increased energy efficiency in homes and businesses. To help our customers be more energy efficient, Atlanta Gas Light initiated an energy efficiency program in 2022 focused on residential customers and expanded the program in 2024 to include commercial customers. These programs offer our residential and commercial customers rebates to upgrade to energy-efficient furnaces, water heaters, and boilers. From 2022 through 2024, customers who have participated in our energy efficiency programs have received rebates on 743 energy-efficient appliances, receiving nearly $250,000 in incentives and avoiding more than 283 annual metric tons of CO2e emissions.

To reach a lower-carbon future, we are seeking opportunities to source natural gas from suppliers who have committed to lowering the emissions from their operations and ways to support renewable fuels. Renewable natural gas (RNG) is a primarily carbon-neutral or carbon-negative source of gas derived from methane from organic material in landfills, crops, food and animal waste. This methane can be integrated into existing infrastructure, providing clean energy for cooking, heating and clothes drying. Through Atlanta Gas Light's utility tariff (TS-1), Atlanta Gas Light is helping to augment the availability of RNG.
We leverage the latest technologies to prevent, identify and mitigate emissions. Modernizing our infrastructure makes our delivery system more efficient and avoids methane leaks. In fact, upgrading vintage pipes with modern materials is recognized as having the single most significant impact on methane emissions reductions in the natural gas distribution industry. As of the end of 2022, our distribution system is 100% free of known cast or wrought iron and unprotected steel — materials that are susceptible to corrosion and leaks. We’ve upgraded our system to state-of-the-art, corrosion-resistant pipes. Over the last 20 years, we have reduced annual methane emissions from our distribution system by approximately 59% even as our system grew by more than 21%.
We employ a broad range of solutions to help us deliver affordable and accessible fuel to homes and businesses across our service area while reducing emissions. By embracing alternative fuels like renewable natural gas (RNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG), we can significantly enhance our sustainability efforts. These fuels offer lower emissions compared to traditional options, contributing to cleaner air and reduced environmental impact. In 2020, across the entire United States, 3.5 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions were avoided by fueling vehicles with RNG. Atlanta Gas Light has been helping fleet customers deploy CNG vehicles to further their sustainability goals by building and maintaining CNG fueling stations for customers under our various rates and programs since 1993.
