Natural Gas Vehicle Road Rally to Stop in Atlanta

18-city tour mobilizes support for clean energy transportation fuel

ATLANTA– June 9, 2017 – Atlanta Gas Light, in coordination with the DeKalb County Public Works Department, is proud to host a stop on the second annual ‘From Sea-to-Shining-Sea’ Natural Gas Vehicle (NGV) Road Rally Across America. The road rally stop will take place Monday, June 12, at 11 a.m. at the DeKalb County CNG Station, 3720 Leroy Scott Dr., Decatur, GA 30032.

The coast-to-coast event is aimed at showcasing the viability of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) vehicles and the network of fueling stations across the nation.

“We are honored to join our partners in hosting the June 12 stop along the road rally and sharing with the community our efforts to integrate natural gas vehicle technology into our operations,” Shannon Pierce, vice president of External Affairs for Atlanta Gas Light said. “This is also a wonderful opportunity to demonstrate how we continue to collaborate with the Georgia Public Service Commission and the Georgia Legislature to develop CNG fueling infrastructure throughout the state.”

By the end of this year, Atlanta Gas Light will have deployed nearly 230 CNG vehicles. By the close of 2018, we are on track to operate nearly 500 CNG vehicles within the fleet across the seven natural gas distribution companies in the Southern Company Gas footprint.

Atlanta Gas Light currently owns and/or maintains approximately 40 stations for its customers. The DeKalb County CNG Station is one of six stations in Georgia that Atlanta Gas Light built under a CNG infrastructure program. The Georgia Public Service Commission approved an initial allocation of $11.5 million in 2011 to fund the program that develops publicly accessible CNG stations.

“We are delighted to welcome the NGV Road Rally to DeKalb County,” DeKalb Environmental Energy Manager Billy Malone said. “The initiative’s clean-burning natural gas focus is consistent with the County’s goal to advance its compressed natural gas program efforts.”

During the rally, Georgia Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols and State Rep. Don Parsons will receive awards for their efforts in support of Georgia’s alternative fuel vehicle industry. Event speakers also include representatives from Atlanta Gas Light, DeKalb County Government, Municipal Gas Authority of Georgia, Pivotal LNG, City of Atlanta, Clean Cities Georgia and United Parcel Service.
