Winter Weather Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe

Winter Weather Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe

As sub-freezing temperatures approach, Atlanta Gas Light is dedicated to keeping our community safe and warm. Prepare for the severe weather with these essential natural gas safety tips:

Gas Meter Safety

  • Locate Your Gas Meter: Ensure you know where your gas meter is situated.
  • Keep the Meter Area Clear: After severe weather, make sure your gas meter is visible and free of trash and debris. Use a broom to clear snow, avoiding shovels or snow blowers.
  • Check Vents and Intakes: Ensure outdoor vent openings and air intakes are not blocked by snow, ice, or debris.
  • Report Gas Meter Damage: If your gas meter is damaged or an underground gas line is exposed, leave the area immediately and call our 24-hour emergency response line at 877-427-4321 from a safe location.

Preventing Damage to Utility Lines

  • Downed Trees and Utility Lines: Severe weather can cause trees to fall and potentially tangle with underground utility lines. Before removing downed trees, call 8-1-1 to have utility lines marked.

Home Heating and Appliance Safety

  • Avoid Using Gas Appliances for Heating: Do not use natural gas appliances to heat your home or business.
  • Keep Natural Gas Service On: Leave your natural gas service on during a storm. Most gas appliances have safety valves that automatically shut off the gas flow if the pilot light goes out.

Fire and Carbon Monoxide Safety

  • Recognize Carbon Monoxide (CO): CO is an odorless gas created when fuels do not burn properly. If you suspect CO, leave immediately and call 911.
    • CO Poisoning Symptoms: Headache, dizziness, fatigue, nausea, and vomiting. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.
  • Maintain Smoke and CO Detectors: Clean smoke detectors and change batteries semi-annually. Install CO detectors near bedrooms, not in kitchens or near furnaces.
  • Develop a Fire Escape Plan: Create and practice a fire escape plan with your family.

Detecting Natural Gas Leaks

  • Smell Gas?: If you detect a 'rotten egg' odor, leave the area immediately and call our emergency line at 877-427-4321.
  • Avoid Creating Sparks: Do not use phones, turn on/off lights, or operate appliances if you smell gas.

Using Natural Gas Generators Safely

  • Operate Generators Outdoors: Keep generators outside in a vented space. Never use them in enclosed or partially enclosed areas.
  • Ensure Continuous Fuel Supply: Natural gas generators provide continuous fuel from your gas line. Contact us to ensure your service line can handle the generator's load.

Stay safe and warm this winter. For any questions or assistance, Atlanta Gas Light is here to help.
